On-site evaluaties met behulp van licht microscopie en eenvoudige kwalitatieve proeven geven voorlopige antwoord op het probleem. Meer gedetailleerde informatie wordt verzameld uit semi-kwantitatieve en kwantitatieve laboratorium analyses.The resulterende gegevens over de storting in combinatie met het systeem van kennis zijn essentieel bij het kiezen en implementeren van de juiste aanbetaling besturingsprogramma.
Deposito's die van invloed zijn een efficiëntie en loopeigenschappen machine zijn gecategoriseerd als organische, anorganische, of microbiologische. Gewoonlijk zullen de meeste afzettingen een combinatie van deze zijn. Organische afzettingen in het algemeen worden ingedeeld in vier groepen: toonhoogte, stickies, papier additieven, en wit toonhoogte. Anorganische afzettingen behoren schaal, vulstof en andere anorganische componenten. Gemeenschappelijke schalen zijn calciumcarbonaat (CaCO3), bariumsulfaat (BaSO4), alumina (Al [OH] 3) en calciumoxalaat (CaC2O4).

Een brede range van chemische producten bestaat voor het verhelpen van ruw water zwevende stoffen in coagulatie / flocculatie processen. Het is bekend dat de effectiviteit van deze coagulatiemiddelen een complex afhankelijkheid van de aard van het ruw water wordt beïnvloed door zaken zoals temperatuur, pH, en met name de specifieke verhoudingen van organische, anorganische en biologische deeltjes die de gesuspendeerde vaste stof vormen. Verder wordt typisch gevonden dat combinaties van coagulatiemiddelen kunnen worden gebruikt om veel hogere prestaties en proces efficiëntie, maar deze prestatie hangt van de complexiteit van de waterbron.
